Let Fresh Air In (When You Can)
Even in winter, try to open windows and doors for a few minutes each day. A quick air-out helps replace musty air with a fresh breeze.
Dry Out Damp Spaces
Use moisture absorbers or a dehumidifier in areas like laundries, bathrooms, or wardrobes. Dry air means fewer smells!
Stay on Top of Rubbish and Bins
Empty kitchen bins regularly. Wipe them out with soapy water or a sprinkle of bicarb soda to soak up smells. Don’t forget to clean drains with boiling water and vinegar.
Use Natural Deodorisers
Put bowls of bicarb soda or activated charcoal in rooms or cupboards—they absorb, rather than mask, bad odours. For a fresh smell, simmer orange peels and cloves on the stove, or pop a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a diffuser.
Wash Soft Furnishings
Winter means more time indoors—so wash cushion covers, pet beds, throw rugs, and curtains regularly to banish hidden smells.
Tackle Mould and Mildew
Check for damp patches behind furniture and around windows. Wipe away any mould with vinegar and keep surfaces dry.
Keep Heaters Clean
Dust and clean portable heaters, air conditioning filters, and vents. A dusty heater can push smelly air through the house.
Tip: Dry shoes and wet coats near the door to stop musty smells from spreading.
